A leak is easier to respond to when you already know the controls and contacts. During a calm moment, locate the water stop valve, gas emergency control valve and electricity controls, and keep safe access clear.
Record where they are and who to contact if they cannot be reached or operated safely. Ask your landlord, water supplier or a competent tradesperson if the arrangement is unclear.
Check a water valve only where it is safely accessible and you know what it serves; never force it. Do not operate the gas emergency valve as a practice drill. Know how to turn it off in an emergency and follow the gas service's advice before restoration.
