Socket Circuits: Rings, Radials & Earths

Behind a socket faceplate there might be one cable, two or three. Changing a socket looks like a five-minute job, but it disturbs the line, neutral and earth connections a circuit depends on, and a socket that powers a lamp afterwards can still hide a dangerous fault.

This lesson explains what’s behind the plate; it doesn’t train you to change one. A dark lamp and a blank plug-in tester don’t prove the box safe to open, and The Golden Rule: Safe Isolation is the minimum before anyone does. Whether the work must be notified depends on where you live and exactly what’s done, but work that needn’t be notified still has to be done safely and tested. Sockets in bathrooms and shower rooms are for a registered electrician.
