A newly planted shrub has a small working root system compared with the space around it. Establishment is the transition as roots develop into that surrounding soil and the plant becomes better able to obtain water and anchor itself.

A healthy-looking canopy does not tell you how far those roots have spread. Likewise, a large flowering specimen is not automatically a better purchase than a smaller healthy one. Look at the plant’s condition, suitability and care needs together.

Choose a manageable plant and an assessed planting area. Complete the earlier tools, buried-services and site checks before disturbing ground. Larger specimens, difficult access or uncertain ground conditions need appropriate help.
