Choosing Between Wi-Fi Bands
Know why 2.4 GHz reaches further but crowds, why 5 GHz falls away through walls, and what 6 GHz really adds.
One Wi-Fi name, several radios
Most hubs have two radios, and some have three. Each works in a different band, a range of radio frequencies: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, on newer equipment, 6 GHz. Usually they all share one Wi-Fi name and password, and the hub nudges each device towards the band that suits it, which is called band steering. Your device has a say too: it picks the band it judges best and can switch as you move around.
So one name doesn’t mean one radio, and splitting the bands into separate names isn’t automatically better. Leave the combined setup alone unless it is causing a specific problem.
