Switching location off
Before a weekend away, Joe switches off Location Services on his phone and feels invisible. He has closed something real: apps can no longer ask the phone where it is. Whether he’s invisible depends on the other routes his location can travel by, and on who sits at the other end of each one.
To find out what a setting does, read the phone’s settings and its maker’s guides. Don’t test it by travelling without a working phone, or by switching off something you rely on for safety.
