The human brain is an energy-hungry organ. While it only accounts for about 2% of our body weight, it consumes roughly 20% of our daily energy. To survive, evolution gave us a way to make decisions on the cheap: mental shortcuts.
Psychologists generally refer to the brain's operation in two modes: System 1 (fast, automatic, and low energy) and System 2 (slow, deliberate, and high energy).
