A dashboard warning tells you that a system needs attention; it rarely identifies the failed part. A battery symbol, for example, can report a charging problem without proving that the alternator itself has failed.

Colour helps attract attention, but the exact symbol, message, flashing pattern and vehicle handbook determine the response. Do not read a handbook or investigate a display while driving. Reach a place of relative safety as soon as it is safe, and follow any urgent stop instruction.
