Fixing into Brick and Block
Read a masonry fixing packet, and set fixings that hold: deep enough, clear of joints and edges, and right for the brick or block.
Brick all the way round
An alcove shelf on a brick wall is the classic first real job, and it holds for one reason: each plug presses against sound brick on every side, deep enough and far enough from any edge for the brick to push back.
Most failures in masonry are one of those going wrong: the plug in plaster rather than brick, in a soft mortar joint, too near a corner, or in a block too soft for it. The packet tells you how to avoid every one, if you know how to read it. Start with depth.
